thrift sales

I still refuse to realize how soon classes will be starting. I'm still in that pleasant place of carefreeness and enjoying the peace and contentment of everyday; taking photos of the wildflowers that grow alongside the driveway, and laying in the sun until my swim-wet hair dries.

This past week I've done a lot of shopping (yard sales and thrift stores, of course), and I'm excited with my purchases so much that I'd like to share them..

Saturday morning yard sales

Crappy (Time?) film camera.. but it was a dollar, so okay.

Okay, I LOVE this painting. I saw it at the same yard sale before, but I've been going there almost every weekend and couldn't find it. Buut, this weekend it was on a table hiding behind a box of curtains! I can't find an artist's name on it, though. Hmm. And don't worry, I plan on changing the frame. Oh, and the random slab of wood on the right was like fifty cents, so I'm going to paint a little something on it, I guess.

I also bought a DVD of The Devil Wears Prada (it's entertaining, even after the 18th time) and the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, which I finished reading in two days.

Then, on Monday..
Guy's Frenchy's in Oromocto

Not exactly sure how to describe this.. it has one strap that goes across my body. I love it!

This is just an exercise top I guess. But I wore it with high waisted shorts. That's probably why it looks wrinkly and grimy in the picture.. oops.

A confusing combination of poncho and knit sweater.

Just your plain grey tshirt. Stretchy and comfy, matches anything.

Also from Frenchy's I bought the novel Native Tongue by Carl Hiaasen, and the book Plainsong by Kent Haruf which I LOVE. I actually already owned the book, but the one at the store was in better condition, so.... hey, if it's one of your favourites.

And, today..
Value Village

The comfiest sweater, even if it was in the men's section. It looks so much better when it's on.

I love this print so much. This kind of shirt is the reason I go to thrift stores in the first place.

A super long knit cardigan, with a tie strap/belt thing.

And, I bought three tape cassettes: Garbage, The Moody Blues, and Aerosmith
and two records: The Moody Blues, and Prism.

Hail the person who came up with the idea of thrift stores. Or yard sales. Imagine starting that.

Hope everyone's had an eventful (or peaceful) August!

treasured travels

The other day my boyfriend came over with something he thought I would love, and did I ever. A while ago on a rainy day, he came by some trash piled up at the end of somebody's driveway, and found boxes and boxes of these film slides. Thankfully he rescued the ones he could; boxes marked with titles like 'Russia Trip 1972'. Coincidentally, he found a working projector at Value Village for fifteen bucks!
So, here we were at my house with my mom's white bed sheet duct taped to the basement wall, flipping  through slides of a stranger's travels from decades ago. And I can't quite explain why, but I was fascinated. This was an exciting time in someone's life, and it's like we're seeing what they saw forty years ago! Sharing the experience with them, I guess, in a way..
And I wish I could give credit to whoever this person was, because they could really take a photo. I know I'm used to seeing hundreds of badly angled/positioned/etc travel photos, and sometimes I'm guilty of the same thing if I'm just snapping away. But this person knew how to capture a moment, and make them look just as great as they are special.

So, obviously I had to have my own camera out as we viewed the photographs; I took pictures of my favourites so I could share them with the rest of the world. Just think about the fact that these are real people going about their lives, photographed by real people going about their adventures. If that doesn't fascinate you, I can't understand you.

pieces of the week

spots of sunshine on the lake that you can run your fingers through

a page of my journal with delicate dragonfly wings

in the evenings the lake is like glass

the place I know as home

just happiness

good boy

a family reunion in the woods

a lopsided dress that is just right

there is no greater peace than that at the heart of the forest

calm

mama always told me not to play with the gypsies

summer evening, lawn chairs & torches
